3-7-18 PM STORM RECOVERY UPDATE; NEW STORM (3:00 PM)

 Status of Power Restoration

Con Edison Service Area:  There has been a modest restoration of service since this morning when Con Edison finally has brought crews to Bedford to deal with the storm.  However, we continue to have nearly 500 residents out of power in Con Edison service area.   The crews, we are told, will be working through the present storm at least until 8 PM, but we know that much will remain to be done. We need crews in Bedford until the work is done and not pulled off the job.

NYSEG Service Area:  I don’t have much more to report since this morning’s update, other than that NYSEG tells us that the 15 line workers that came in this morning are continuing to work on the affected circuits serving Bedford and the plan continues to stay working through the storm.   We are pressing hard to get those resources to continue here in Bedford until the job is done.

I should mention that power has been restored to all critical facilities in Bedford; of course, this does not lessen the human impact on customers without power.  We know of no life support customers in Bedford without power.

 Updated 3:00 PM Road Closures:

Some significant progress –Guard Hill by West Patent is the only road currently closed.

 WARMING/CHARGING CENTERS; OVERNIGHT SHELTER

We have the following resources:

FROM LAST NIGHT’S POST
WHAT CAN WE DO? –  The storm preparedness and storm response of both NYSEG and Con Edison has been appalling.   They did not prepare for the storm, (notwithstanding ample notice that it would occur and that it would carry high winds, which means downed trees and lines) and now they are failing to properly respond to it.

I have asked for 24 hour crews.   NYSEG has responded with “we are working daylight hours”.  Con Edison crews are working until 9 PM.   This will not get the job done.

I have heard that many of you have called NYSEG and Con Edison until you’re blue in the face and with no impact whatsoever.

 What to do?

Both Governor Andrew Cuomo and County Executive George Latimer have been working hard to help us.  We now need to ask them to demand that the utilities apply the resources that are needed to get the job done.  Please contact them and ask them to demand around the clock work to restore power (please note, after hours leave a message):

Governor Cuomo: 518-474-8390 (also an online form is at https://www.governor.ny.gov/content/governor-contact-form)

County Executive Latimer:  914-274-2900  and you also can e-mail at ceo@westchestergov.com

Also use Social Media to post directly to NYSEG and Con Edison the demand for 24 hour resources:

 BE SAFE

Given the incidents over the past couple of days, I am compelled to repeat precautions I’ve mentioned previously and add a new one regarding traffic lights that are out:

Live Wires

Not all downed lines have been cleared.  These are LIVE electrical wires posing an imminent danger. As I mentioned in my previous posts, PLEASE BE SAFE and PLEASE DON’T EVADE OR UNBLOCK barricades or emergency tape which emergency personnel have put in place. They are there to protect the community. We have reports from our Fire Departments of multiple incidents of motorists and others cutting emergency tape or moving barricades exposing themselves to LIVE power lines. You will get electrocuted and die if you take this type of action. Please stay away from downed wires! They have NOT been de-energized. The first priority for the utilities is to get them de-energized.

Carbon Monoxide

Please do not use natural-gas powered kitchen ovens or ranges to heat your home. Using these cooking appliances for heating creates a significant risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Carbon monoxide is a poisonous gas that is invisible, odorless and tasteless. It is formed by the incomplete burning of fuels such as heating oil, wood, gasoline, natural gas, propane and charcoal. Also, don’t use charcoal grills indoors for heating or cooking because of the CO risk that also creates. The same warning applies to fireplaces that are not properly ventilated.

Traffic Light Outages

We have one traffic light out in Town, but there are others that are out in neighboring towns. Motorists approaching a malfunctioning traffic light should stop their vehicles as if they are approaching a stop sign. This means come to a full stop. The only exception is when a police officer directs you to proceed otherwise. Once stopped, you must obey the applicable right-of-way laws. Following your stop, you must yield to any other vehicle that has already entered the intersection from any other direction or one that presents an immediate hazard.

Please feel free to e-mail me at supervisor@bedfordny.gov or call me at 666-6530. Please call the Police Desk at 914-241-3111 with reports of downed trees or wires or e-mail me.

Thanks for your patience.
